From the Millennium Development Goals to the Sustainable Development Goals
In 1972, in Stockholm, Sweden, the United Nations Conference on the Environment and Human Resources (Stockholm Conference) took place. Held from June 5-16, 1972, it was the first United Nations conference to focus on international environmental issues. Then, in December 1983, the World Commission for Environment and Development (WCED) or Brundtland Commission was established to unite countries to pursue sustainable development together.
In 1992, at the World Summit on Environment and Development (Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit) attended by 179 countries, Agenda 21 was adopted as a common planning framework for designing action programmes to achieve sustainable development in the twenty-first century.
In September 2000, the United Nations Summit adopted the Millennium Declaration with 8 Millennium Development Goals.
The social and environmental goals reflected in the Millennium Development Goals and Agenda 21 continued to be discussed, supplemented and refined at the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg (South Africa) in 2002.

Since September 2013, countries have launched the process of developing the post-2015 United Nations Development Agenda, and developed a set of 17 sustainable development goals. The 2030 Agenda with 17 sustainable development goals was officially adopted on 25 September 2015 at the United Nations Summit attended by 193 member countries. The 2030 Agenda has universal, broad and comprehensive policy coverage, with the goal of completing the unfinished work of the Millennium Development Goals and Agenda 21 leaving no one behind.
